A gorgeous emerald cicada was caught by Lizzie's cat. Not content to have just killed the poor creature, he also tried to destroy the painting in progress. Despite Jimmy's best efforts, she has been carefully rendered using layers of watercolour to capture the varying green and earthy hues of her carapace and wings.
The painting was a perfect starter to 'Preludes' of my 'Preludes and Nocturnes' series, which is based upon day dwelling and nocturnal species endemic to New Zealand. What balmy summer day would be complete without the chorus of kiritara.
