After stepping out of the market scene in 2022, Yon Kavvas of Claybird Ceramics says she is excited to be back at the General Collective Lifestyle & Design Market this month to reconnect with her tribe, launch new work and lead ceramic painting workshops.
“I took a year off from markets as there was just so much on with special projects and collaborations, and I really missed it – I missed my market family,” she says.
“General Collective keeps me invested – the customers, the atmosphere and the level of professionalism. I’ve done lots of markets and there’s nothing like General Collective – it’s so well put together, all the people are small business owners, they all have the same struggles, after time you get to know each other so well – it's a lovely family,” she says.
Claybird Ceramics has been part of General Collective since the very start and has built up a loyal following, many who show up at each market just to see what new and exciting pieces Yon has created.
“I have a lovely bunch of repeat customers who collect my work and seek me out. They know I always make something special which they can only buy at the market – something that isn’t available online,” she says.
Yon says she works hard to stay ahead of the trend, pulling inspiration from the fashion industry and keeping on top of emerging design to ensure her work stays fresh.
“I think that keeps people interested and coming back – everyone is along for the ride, and they love seeing what I’m doing,” she says.
Before Claybird, Yon owned a textiles business creating designer rugs from artwork. After focussing on raising her kids for a solid ten years she began taking night classes to learn ceramics and in 2012 she made the decision to turn her passion into a business.
Today Claybird Ceramics has grown to be a well-known and much-loved Kiwi brand. Yon says she is a firm believer that everyone should make time for the things they love and pursue their interests.
