With the first big General Collective Lifestyle and Design Market for 2021 just around the corner, we shine the spotlight on some of our talented Māori creatives bringing their best mahi to the ASB Showgrounds on Sunday 2 May. Here are a few of our top picks…
Hamilton-based creative Nichola Te Kiri explores narratives drawn from the environment around her as well as her Māori and Pākeha heritage and upbringing. The result – a bold and courageous line of clothing, accessories, jewellery and gifts with a contemporary Māori flavour.
Drawing on inspiration from his Ngāti Tūwharetoa heritage and love for minimal design, fashion designer Mitchell Vincent creates limited edition clothing for Kiwis which is full of heart for his label Mitchell Vincent Collection. His Rare Manawa range features t-shirts and jewellery which incorporate affectionate names in Te Reo Māori such as, Taku Makau (My Darling) and Taku Tōrere (My Beloved).
Taiamai Wairua Heritage is whanau owned business based in Waimate North, Bay of Islands. They expertly handcraft unique kūmarahou activated pūriri charcoal soap, skin balms, elixir cough syrups, kūmarahou tea, hand sanitiser and bee wraps – the perfect place to stock up on traditional winter wellness products.
Taputapu was created by Nikki Kennedy of Ngāti Porou, Te Aitanga a Mahaki and Te Whakatōhea descent with the goal of helping get Te Reo Māori into every whare by way of uniquely designed homewares and gifts. They have an inspiring range of eco-friendly products such as bamboo tumblers inscribed with inumia (to drink) and plates with e kai (eat!).
With 200 stalls showcasing a thoughtfully curated selection of homewares, fashion, art, gifts, kids products and more, the whole whanau will be entertained with free activity stations for the kids, delicious food from Auckland’s best street food vendors along with great coffee and our lively wine bar.
Come and see the difference!
